Help Us Recycle for Sight
Written by Selden-Central Brookhaven Lions
Friday, 16 March 2007
ImageAccording to The World Health Organization, 153 million people have uncorrected refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism). Most of these vision impairments are quickly diagnosed and easy to treat with corrective lenses.

Still, millions of people in developing nations are pushed deeper into poverty simply because they don't have glasses. They can't learn, because reading is difficult. They can't work to the best of their ability, because they can't see clearly.  For children, clear vision means a better education, healthier development and a better quality of life.  For adults, it means greater employment opportunity and economic strength. For seniors it means less dependence on others.

For more than 80 years, individual Lions clubs and districts in the U.S., Canada and several other countries have collected used eyeglasses for distribution to the needy in developing nations. Since 1996, more than 37 million eyeglasses have been collected, and the number of donations each year continues to grow because of Lions clubs members.

You can donate your used eyeglasses. Deposit them in Central Brookhaven Lions' eyeglasses collection boxes, at the following locations:

  • Vision Center at Walmart in Middle Island
  • West Middle Island Elementary School in Middle Island (in the Administrative Office)
  • Coram Fire Department in Coram (in the Dispatch Room)
  • State Farm Insurance, 760-C Horseblock Rd. in Farmingville
  • South CountryCentral  School District Administrative Offices in East Patchogue
